for Educators

Imagine a privately-funded group successfully sending a robotic rover to the moon. This may become a reality for your students as Google and the X PRIZE Foundation team up to motivate people all over the world to participate in the Google Lunar X PRIZE, a $30 million prize to be awarded to the first privately-funded robotic rovers to land on the Moon before December 31, 2014.

Why the Moon? Because space exploration has historically produced much of the scientific community's most ambitious research.  And because the moon can be a resource for the Earth, being composed of some of the most important elements: 42% oxygen, 13% iron, 21% silicon plus others. The Google Lunar X PRIZE's mission is twofold: Apart from stimulating private research and development of a lunar robotic lander, the Lunar X PRIZE also hopes to stimulate interest in space and space exploration through motivating private groups around the world to develop technology that can used by all of humanity.
